Wheatgrass — What It Is and Why I Grow It
Few actually know what it is.
Even fewer grow it themselves.
I do. And it changed how I think about food.
๐พ What Is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant.
Harvested early — usually around 7 to 10 days after sprouting.
It looks simple. It grows fast. And it's one of the most nutrient-dense things you can grow at home.
๐งช Why It's Different From Microgreens
I grow both. But they're not the same.
Microgreens are young vegetable plants — harvested and eaten as food.
Wheatgrass is different.
You don't eat it like a salad.
You juice it. Or blend it. Or add it to something.
A small amount goes a long way.
๐ฟ Why I Started Growing It
Honestly? I was curious.
I kept seeing wheatgrass shots in health content online.
But I didn't trust what was being sold.
So I grew it myself.
That was the point — to know exactly what I was consuming.
No unknown source. No long storage. No guessing.
Just something I grew and used fresh.
๐ How I Grow It (Simple Setup)
It's not complicated.
Here's what I use:
- A basic tray
- Wheat seeds (easily available)
- Cocopeat or soil
- Water
- Indirect sunlight
The process is almost identical to microgreens.
Soak seeds overnight → spread on tray → water gently → let it grow.
In about 7–10 days, it's ready to harvest.
⚠️ What I Got Wrong at First
A few things:
- I didn't soak the seeds long enough
- I watered too much in the early days
- I harvested too late (it gets bitter)
These are small mistakes. You fix them by doing, not by reading.
๐ฑ What It Taught Me
Growing wheatgrass isn't just about the plant.
It's about the habit.
When you grow something yourself:
- You're more intentional about what you consume
- You stop reaching for packaged alternatives
- You start to trust the process
That shift in thinking — that's the real benefit.
Final Thought
You don't need a juicebar. You don't need a supplement. You just need a tray, some seeds, and seven days.
Start with wheatgrass. Grow it once. See how it feels.
